Bourbon whiskey is a style of barrel-aged American whiskey predominantly made from corn. Although its production dates back to the 18th century, bourbon was officially recognized as a "distinctive product of the United States" by the U.S. Congress in 1964. To be classified as bourbon in the U.S., the whiskey must be produced domestically, contain at least 51% corn, and be aged in new charred oak barrels.
